One of the methods used for determination of Stiffness of a fabric sample is based on the cantilever principal. In this method a rectangular test strip is allowed to bend under its own weight as the length of its overhanging portion projecting beyond a flat horizontal support is increased gradually. The free length which bends under its own weight sufficiently to make its leading edge intersect a plane of 41.50 inclination to horizontal and passing through the front edge of the plate supporting the test specimen is taken as the measure of stiffness of the fabric.
The ‘VGOTECH’ Stiffness Tester consists of a horizontal platform fitted above two vertical transparent acrylic side walls. The top plate is chromium plated to minimize friction between it and the test specimen. The transparent acrylic walls have lines marked on them to indicate the specified angle of inclination. The base of the tester is made from mild steel plates and has arrangement for adjusting the level of the testing platform.
A metalic loading strip with an anodized aluminium scale on one side and a rubber lined lower face is provided for loading the specimen during testing. The scale is so calibrated as to give the bending length of the fabric under test directly.
The tester is finished in bright / chrome plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish.
